The Stop Press news is that we’re delighted to announce that we will have Clive Carroll as a guest tutor for 2 days of this workshop so it’s going to be an exciting (and busy) week.
Having worked and gigged with John as a teenager Clive is of course now at the forefront of fingerstyle guitar as a player, composer and teacher of international standing so we are privileged to add his name to this workshop.
It's a real bonus for us to have someone with such excellent Renbourn credentials helping us to keep John's musical legacy alive through these workshops.
The workshops in the last 2 years have focused on the earlier Renbourn compositions and arrangements as we have celebrated the 50 th anniversaries of John's first 2 albums. The fare in June will be a little more varied but we intend to focus down failry intensively on a smaller number of pieces.
Students will also have the opportunity to try a couple of John's own instruments.
The 1963 Gibson J50 which John used in recording the Another Monday and SirJohnALot albums now in the possession of Renbourn Guitar Workshops tutor Remy Froissart. This iconic old Gibson is a real piece of Folk Baroque history.
We're planning for all the students to have the oportunity to record a piece as usual and anyone who wants to will be able to use John's guitar if they want to (how's that for a souvenir?).
John's sitar is now in Mike Walker's possession and will be there too for anyone brave enough to have a go.
This instrument of course contributed a lot to Pentangle's sound.
In the picture it's still set up as John last used with it a transducer gaffer-taped to the sound board.
Southern Crete was a favourite place of John's and he loved to spend time there enjoying the laid back character of the place and its people, and of course their music. It makes it a natural choice to return to for our workshops - celebrating John's music.
As ever, workshop fees will include 6 days tution, 7 nights accommodation, breakfasts and dinners and once again the deal for non-playing partners is attractively priced. Accommodation ranges from camping to 4 star hotel accommodation.
Sessions and meals will centre around the Kipos Taverna close by Agia Galini's camping site within easy strolling distance of the beach and town. Spare time will be easily filled with plenty of opportunities for private study and, of course, after hours jamming for those who are looking for total immersion in the music.
